Haiti Family Care Network - Resources

Through tools, publications, policy examples, and other information offered on the following topics, we strive to provide resources that will help improve the quality of care for children in Haiti and ensure that they have the opportunity to thrive in families. (Resources in Haitian Creole and French are included when available.)

We are working with organizations throughout Haiti to identify and develop resources on these topics. As each topic is rolled out, you will find links to relevant resources and tools below.

Resources

Education 

Education is a key component of change, and a critical aspect of children’s development. Here you will find resources related to education in Haiti, through a Child Protection lens. 

Trafficking Prevention

Whether you are working with victims of human trafficking, involved with an orphanage, or working with children and families in any other capacity, these resources can help you understand the links between children’s institutions and human trafficking – as well as the safeguards your organization can put in place to help protect children from falling victim to trafficking.

Family Reunification

Learn more about the process of family reunification, including resources developed by organizations that have decades of experience reuniting children with their families in Haiti, and models used across the world. 

Strengthening Families

Family preservation and strengthening are impactful ways of protecting children and reinforcing communities. Whether you’re providing these services to prevent separation or to strengthen families following reunification, there are many different methods of reinforcing the family unit. Child Welfare Systems in Haiti / Haitian Governmental Authorities 

It is critical that organizations working to create change in Haiti (or any country) abide by national laws and strive to collaborate with local authorities. Learn about initiatives local authorities such as IBESR are taking, find resources about how to work alongside them, and inform yourself as well as others on the laws related to Child Protection in Haiti. 

Alternative Care 

Not all children can be reunited with their biological families – yet these children still have the right to grow up in a family environment. There are many family-based care alternatives, such as kinship placements, foster families, and local adoption. Find more information about these alternatives here. 

Caring for Families in Emergencies

Learn more about how to keep children safe and keep families together during and after emergency situations such as natural disasters or times of nationwide conflict. 

Health and Wellness

Accessing healthcare is a tremendous challenge in Haiti and lack of access to support for pregnant and new mothers, lack of malnutrition care and stigma around disabilities can all be drivers for relinquishment of a child to an orphanage. Unfortunately living in an orphanage can also produce health and wellness challenges such as increased vulnerability to abuse and depression.

Funding

Funding a child in an orphanage is significantly more expensive than funding the support needed to thrive in a family. From the donor level to the project manager level, examples of family based care costs, budgets and examples are necessary to ensure adequate fundraising and resource allocation.​​
